DELEGATE Pat McDonough Launches NUT TAX PROTEST
Are You a N.U.T.?
Once upon a time there was a governor in Maryland named William Preston Lane . Governor Lane had a brilliant idea: create a new sales tax. The new sales tax, first of its kind, obviously, would cost taxpayers one penny. The taxpayers of Maryland reacted very angrily and began to call Governor Lane “ Penny Lane .” Worse than that, the irate citizenry began to toss pennies at the Governor whenever he made a personal appearance. Finally the voters vented their outrage by throwing “ Penny Lane ” out of office.
I have a personal belief that if a politician raises taxes, that is a shameful act. Politicians creates new taxes, that is more than shameful, that is tragic.. Finally if a politician raises taxes when it is unnecessary, that is shameful, tragic, and criminal. The key word here for all taxpayers is the word “UNNECESSARY.”
Minnesota’s elected officials recently demonstrated they can act in the best interests of taxpayers if they approach a problem in a non-partisan, honest fashion. Democratic Governor Pawlenty joined with Republicans in the State Legislature to defeat a 5 billion dollar tax increase that would cost the average Minnesota family up to an extra $500 a year. Minnesota is a unique state because it has three major political parties - the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, and the Democrat Farmer Labor Party. The tax and spend l eft-leaning Farmer Labor Party controls the Senate and House in Minnesota . They proposed the massive tax increase. Governor Pawlenty and the Republican Caucus joined together to defeat the tax hike and still managed to balance the budget. This is a clear-cut example for Governor O’Malley to follow.
Governor O’Malley and the tax-and-spend leadership of the Maryland General Assembly are engaging in big lies and scare tactics in order to promote one of the largest tax increases in the history of our state. More importantly, this massive tax package is totally unnecessary. The politicians in Annapolis can simply reduce the rate of increased spending from 8% to 4% and successfully balance the budget.
A super-sales tax, gas tax, cigarette tax, environmental tax, and earnings tax increase are all “UNNECESSARY!”
We the people, must send a clear signal to O’Malley and the rest of the propagandists that we know what they are up to. The people must come together and send a letter (not an e-mail) to the Governor proclaiming their outrage and their steadfast support for the N.U.T. Program (Note: N.U.T. Program means: “No Unnecessary Taxes”).
Please include in your envelope a few well placed peanuts to make the point that you are a N.U.T. and will not be duped, lied to, or scared into believing that we need any tax increases in an already over-taxed state. Let the Statehouse and Governor’s Mansion recieve a abundance of nuts as a protest against their shoddy shell game.
